When a person would listen to music attentively, millions of neurons in the brain fire away simultaneously and affects almost all parts of the brain. The cerebellum, for example, is the part of the brain that is responsible for sensory perception, coordination and motor skills. A person who would listen to music would usually tap his or her foot to the beat of the songs, because of the cerebellum.

There are different reasons people would listen to music, other than personal satisfaction. In sports psychology, some athletes are encouraged to listen to a particular type of music before their game or competition. Power lifters, for example, are encouraged to listen to music that is aggressive so their senses are heightened along with their adrenaline. In movies, music is used to affect the mood of the audience. This probably why horror movies can be frightening to some people. They listen to music that complements the scary scene.
There have been theories that listening to classical artists such as Mozart would increase a child's IQ. Although this is not yet proven, there are parents who would let their kids listen to music by classical composers.

A concert is a common event where people go to listen to music. They go there for several reasons such as watching their favourite artist play, social activity and even for charitable causes. A more intimate place where someone could listen to music live is a bar. There are bars that specialise in a particular genre such as jazz bars, rock bars, blues bars and hip hop bars.

There are a lot of products that allow people to listen to music privately or with a smaller group. Recorded music also paved the way for the invention of music players used by people who want to listen to music. These include the vinyl player, cassette tape player, CD player and audio components. Most recently, MP3 players have been used by a lot of people, so they listen to music wherever they go.
Music CDs and DVDs containing music videos and concerts are commonly sold in music stores, while music players are widely available in appliance and gadgets stores. Online, people can also listen to music through Internet radio, embedded music players music downloads.
